How To Measure for Roller Shutters

Roller Shutter Doors - Measuring Guide

MEASURING YOUR ROLLER SHUTTER DOOR / HIGH SPEED DOOR

There is no “standard size” for our roller shutters or high speed doors. Each door opening will need to be accurately measured to ensure that your door is the correct fit, operates smoothly and provides the appropriate thermal insulation.

This information is primarily aimed at those of you who wish to install the shutter/door yourselves. This guide will help you specify and order the correct sizes. Should you wish us to undertake the installation then one of our surveyors will visit your site and take measurements. This will not only ensure the perfect fit but will mean that responsibility for the size of the shutter/door manufactured rests with us.

You will need to consider and make a note of any pipes, ductwork, etc above or immediately to the sides of the opening that may need to be relocated or incorporated into the design of the installation.

Check the floor level. Is it even? If an exterior opening does the floor slope away from the door or might it cause water to collect?

Verify that any supporting steelwork / masonry etc, is in good condition.

If the shutter is to be fitted over doors or windows, will they still open when a shutter is installed?

Check where the nearest power supply is located. If you can identify what type of supply it is (1ph, 3ph, isolator, spur, socket type, etc). Decide which would be the best side to fit the shutter controls to. It is standard to position the controls the nearest side to the power supply.

You will need to be aware that there may be a difference in size between the structural size of the opening and the actual working size of the shutter/door once installed. For example if the shutter barrel is fitted within the reveal (i.e, between the brickwork/supports of the opening) then the actual working height would be lower than the structural height of the opening.

Depending upon your application and the characteristics of the existing opening an external face fix, a reveal fix or an internal face fix will be the most appropriate.

Please remember that all our roller shutters are custom built to satisfy your unique requirements so we can be infinitely flexible. We delight in providing solutions to “difficult” installations.

EXTERNAL FACE FIX

Prior to consideration of an external fit, you may wish to consult with your local authority to ascertain if planning permission is required. This is most likely to be needed, for example, if it is a commercial premises in a conservation area but if you have any doubt it is always best to check.

The shutter/door guides will be fixed against the external face of the opening. A shutter/door canopy/hood will also be required to offer protection against the weather. Enough room will need to be allowed for the canopy/hood to sit above the opening (C in the measuring plan). The size of this will depend upon the type and height of the shutter/door. Please call us and we can advise the space required. Check to the left and right of the opening for any obstruction to ensure that the guides can be fitted. If there is anything that protrudes then packers or additional steel can be fitted. If you are satisfied that there will be sufficient room then please let us know the sizes marked D & E in the measuring plan. If the width appears not to be all the same then please take a top middle and bottom measurement. Follow the same procedure with the height if this appears to be uneven.

REVEAL FIX

The shutter/door guides will be fixed between the brickwork/steelwork of the opening. As the shutter coil will also been fitted in the reveal then there will be a reduction in the effective opening height of the door. The size of this will depend upon the type and height of the shutter/door. Please call us and we can advise the space required.
